The Shaar Hashomayim Choir with Gideon Zelermyer and Stephen Glass
(Montreal, QC)
This concert provides Montrealers with the rare opportunity to experience one of the world’s leading synagogue choirs and cantors in the most intimate of settings. Performing selections from the often haunting and always inspiring high-holiday service repertoire, the Shaar Hashomayim choir will no doubt amaze with their oft-praised blended sound. Carefully crafted for male voices by world-renowned conductor, arranger and accompanist Stephen Glass, the choir’s arrangements and song selection remain true to the strong traditions of European synagogue choral music while at the same time advancing that tradition into the 21st century. The choir is joined by Cantor Gideon Zelermyer, the Shaar Hashomayim’s cantor since 2004. He has earned himself a reputation as a singer with a glorious lyric tenor voice, impeccable musical taste and a cantorial style that blends the best of the traditional with the modern. In May 2011, Cantor Zelermyer and the choir released its first CD to critical acclaim, featuring a wide selection of a cappella pieces from the Congregation's vast repertoire.
